Successful performance of the duties of a personnel representative requires that the representative has sufficient knowledge of the various areas of working life and practical matters related to the performance of the duties.
The training opportunities of shop stewards are affected by which negotiating organization’s shop steward is in question. Access to the training courses requires notification of the start of the shop steward’s term to the negotiating organization, as well as possible registration on the negotiating organization’s website.
The shop steward’s right to use working hours for training depends on the regulations of the applicable collective agreement and any local agreements concluded at the workplace.

With regard to the public sector, shop stewards from the state sector and universities belonging to the Union of Professional Engineers in Finland are trained by JUKO. JUKO mainly only trains chief shop stewards, but shop stewards can also be included if there is room for them in the training courses. JUKO only informs the chief shop stewards directly about training. The shop stewards can inquire about the training courses directly from JUKO.
In addition, shop stewards in the public sector of the Union of Professional Engineers in Finland have the right to participate in shop stewards’ training organized by TEK and KTK. Information on them can be found on the websites of the unions in question. The costs of these are paid by the Union of Professional Engineers in Finland. If there is any uncertainty in this regard, you can contact the collective agreement expert responsible for the public sector.

The employer must ensure that the occupational safety and health representative and deputy representative have the opportunity to receive the training required for the task.
